Failure Analysis
In spring 2014 for Failure Analysis and Prevention at Olin College, I and my team of five people worked with a company to assess a mechanical failure that was occurring in their product. The company felt that the product manufacturer was to blame and vice-versa so we were tasked with finding the root cause. Through micro-analysis and mechanical failure tests, we were able to shed some light on the cause of failure for this case. Over a semester, we explored mechanical strength, material composition and structure, grain growth due to welding procedures, and vibration analysis.
Through this project, I was able to learn the importance of in-depth analysis to assess the physical, human, and latent errors within production. It highlighted the importance of establishing and maintaining a good relationship between manufacturer, company and consumer.
